A great pose to strengthen your thighs and calves, the Chair Pose also stretched the chest and shoulders. I love doing this one in my organic cotton  fold over yoga pants. They are soft and comfortable. I practice with peace of mind knowing I am doing my best to be in unity with the earth.

The Chair Pose

Stand in Tadasana. Inhale and raise your arms perpendicular to the floor. Either keep the arms parallel, palms facing inward, or join the palms.

Exhale and bend your knees, trying to take the thighs as nearly parallel to the floor as possible. The knees will project out over the feet, and the torso will lean slightly forward over the thighs until the front torso forms approximately a right angle with the tops of the thighs. Keep the inner thighs parallel to each other and press the heads of the thigh bones down toward the heels.

Firm your shoulder blades against the back. Take your tailbone down toward the floor and in toward your pubis to keep the lower back long.

Stay for 30 seconds to a minute. To come out of this pose straighten your knees with an inhalation, lifting strongly through the arms. Exhale and release your arms to your sides into Tadasana.

Feel Great Doing the Full Boat in Your Best Yoga Pants

You’ll feel great doing this weeks pose, The Full Boat. This asana helps strengthen the abdomen and spine. Also a great stress reliever, this pose helps with digestion.  I find that the  best yoga pants for this pose are either leggings or a nice fold-over yoga pant.

The Full Boat (Paripurna Navasana)

Step by Step

Sit on the floor with your legs straight in front of you. Press your hands on the floor a little behind your hips, fingers pointing toward the feet, and strengthen the arms. Lift through the top of the sternum and lean back slightly. As you do this make sure your back doesn’t round; continue to lengthen the front of your torso between the pubis and top sternum. Sit on the “tripod” of your two sitting bones and tailbone.

Exhale and bend your knees, then lift your feet off the floor, so that the thighs are angled about 45-50 degrees relative to the floor. Lengthen your tailbone into the floor and lift your pubis toward your navel. If possible, slowly straighten your knees, raising the tips of your toes slightly above the level of your eyes. If this isn’t possible remain with your knees bent, perhaps lifting the shins parallel to the floor.

Stretch your arms alongside the legs, parallel to each other and the floor. Spread the shoulder blades across your back and reach strongly out through the fingers. If this isn’t possible, keep the hands on the floor beside your hips or hold on to the backs of your thighs.

While the lower belly should be firm, it shouldn’t get hard and thick. Try to keep the lower belly relatively flat. Press the heads of the thigh bones toward the floor to help anchor the pose and lift the top sternum. Breathe easily. Tip the chin slightly toward the sternum so the base of the skull lifts lightly away from the back of the neck.

At first stay in the pose for 10-20 seconds. Gradually increase the time of your stay to 1 minute. Release the legs with an exhalation and sit upright on an inhalation.

Show Off Your Yoga Pants in the Warrior II Pose

This weeks pose is the Warrior II Pose, orVirabhadrasana II, a great way to strengthen and stretch legs and ankles. A great pair of yoga capris can help show off your new legs. This pose also helps stretch your chest, lungs and shoulders making it a great all around pose.

Step by Step

Stand in Tadasana. With an exhalation, step or lightly jump your feet 3 1/2 to 4 feet apart. Raise your arms parallel to the floor and reach them actively out to the sides, shoulder blades wide, palms down.

Turn your right foot in slightly to the right and your left foot out to the left 90 degrees. Align the left heel with the right heel. Firm your thighs and turn your left thigh outward so that the center of the left knee cap is in line with the center of the left ankle.

Exhale and bend your left knee over the left ankle, so that the shin is perpendicular to the floor. If possible, bring the left thigh parallel to the floor. Anchor this movement of the left knee by strengthening the right leg and pressing the outer right heel firmly to the floor.

Stretch the arms away from the space between the shoulder blades, parallel to the floor. Don’t lean the torso over the left thigh: Keep the sides of the torso equally long and the shoulders directly over the pelvis. Press the tailbone slightly toward the pubis. Turn the head to the left and look out over the fingers.

Stay for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Inhale to come up. Reverse the feet and repeat for the same length of time to the left.

Help Your Student with Pre-Test Jitters; Practice Yoga

It is coming to the season of testing here in CT. My 3rd grader will be taking her first set of standardized tests this year. It got me thinking about how children have a lot more stress than we think they do.

Test taking can cause a lot of anxiety in kids and adults too. There is a lot of pressure to do well, and frankly I find that anything timed is stressful even if it is fun. So here are some things your kids can do to calm down before a test.

If they are stressing out at home, having trouble sleeping or the like doing a quick set of poses can be a good help. Cat Cow Pose or Extended Puppy Pose can be a good way to get them to relax.

At school have them do a few calming breaths before the test starts and remind them that stopping to breath during the test or when stuck on a difficult problem may help to clear their heads.

So throw on your favorite yoga pants and get your kids doing it too. You will all feel better for it.

Do the Tree Pose in Your Organic Yoga Pants

One of my favorite poses is the Tree Pose or Vrksasana. This pose is great for strengthening your thighs and legs as well as helping with your balance. I love the feeling of stretching my roots into the ground and reaching my branches to the sky. It makes me feel more in tune with the earth. I wear organic yoga pants because I know that every little thing we do that helps the planet adds up in the end. It is important to do what we can for the earth, it is the only one we have.

So here it is:

The Tree Pose:

Stand in Mountain Pose. Shift your weight slightly onto the left foot, keeping the inner foot firm to the floor, and bend your right knee. Reach down with your right hand and clasp your right ankle.

Draw your right foot up and place the sole against the inner left thigh; if possible, press the right heel into the inner left groin, toes pointing toward the floor. The center of your pelvis should be directly over the left foot.

Rest your hands on the top rim of your pelvis. Make sure the pelvis is in a neutral position, with the top rim parallel to the floor.

Lengthen your tailbone toward the floor. Firmly press the right foot sole against the inner thigh and resist with the outer left leg. Press your hands together in prayer pose. Gaze softly at a fixed point in front of you on the floor about 4 or 5 feet away.

Stay for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Step back to Tadasana with an exhalation and repeat for the same length of time with the legs reversed.

So remember to throw on your organic yoga pants and dig your roots deep.

The Best Yoga Pants are Organic

When looking for a great pair of yoga pants, consider purchasing a pair of organic yoga pants. There are many benefits to clothes made with organic fabrics.

The best fabrics are eco- friendly such as bamboo, cotton, soy and hemp. These fabrics are not only breathable and lightweight but they are also better for the environment and your health. Organic cotton, bamboo and hemp are grown, harvested and processed in a manner that is eco-friendly. They are also renewable, which means that they can be regrown easily and without causing depletion of the land. Hemp is great because it is not only renewable but helps the environment as well.  Eco-Friendly fabrics are also biodegradable, so they don’t hang around in dumps forever like the synthetics.  As they are grown, no harmful pesticides are used. In the processing earth friendly dyes are used.  Using natural organic fabrics is also another way to bring harmony between yourself and the earth.

So next time you go out to purchase a new pair of yoga pants, make the decision to get a pair that is made from organic fabrics. The planet will thank you.
